Foodies Guide to Kitchen Magic

When I first started to read Foodies Guide to Kitchen Magic, (http://lyricalpress.com ) two things were immediately clear to me. First, Sandra Sookoo knows her way around the kitchen. Second, Sookoo is definitely a writer who understands building tension. Delicious tension. Mmmmm.
Aidan, her main female character, wants to be a famous cook—except that she can’t really cook. The only thing she appears to be able to do is magic in the kitchen. I gather she has just learned she has the gift and is as sloppy and inattentive to this skill as she is to her cooking skills.
Enter Matteus, the man who is going to teach her a thing or two about magic and in the process, heats things up a bit in her kitchen…but, of course, when it comes to teachers and students especially of magic, things can be complicated, when it comes to attraction.
Sookoo deftly builds her characters, her scenes, and her story unfolds nicely. It’s a fun, sexy read, especially for foodies. I have one criticism—it sort of, well, left me hanging a bit. Some people prefer to hang there on the edge of passion, and so it’s not much of a criticism. But I would have loved a nitty-gritty kitchen sex scene at the end of the book. But that’s just me and we all know how hungry I am.

“WAG #5: Life In Motion” Sometimes it’s good to approach writing like taking a photograph with words. On the other hand, it’s important to remember that a scene is always in transition. For this week’s adventure, sit in a good observation spot and notice how the scene in front of you changes from one minute to the next. Has the light changed? The sounds? The people? What’s different now compared to when you first arrived? Is there anything you can see (or hear, smell, etc) that is changing right in front of you? Be creative and break the rules! This week is all about change!

“WAG #4: Do You Hear What I Hear?” So often, our brain filters out the sounds we hear every day, but sounds can make a story so much more concrete and help your readers feel like they’re really there in a story. This week, go out, sit and listen. (Close your eyes if that helps!) Let your attention move from the obvious sounds to the subtle ones. Try to take in the sounds you usually filter out, whether it’s voices, traffic, children, the hum of overhead lights, or whatever. Write a short description of the sounds and your experience, especially anything unexpected.

WAG # 3 Mother at the Theatre

She has two small girls by the hands as she shuffles them into their theater seats. Turning to help one off with her coat and mumbles something to her. They are a flurry of coats and bags and hushes until they settle into their seats. She has nondescript moussy brown hair falling to her shoulders , with a tad of gray streaked through it. She hasn’t bothered with much—if any—make up. And there are circles under her tired, but kind eyes. Yet, she is pretty. A huge quilted bag is slung over her shoulder—knitting? No. She pulls out a book to read while she’s waiting for the show. Her daughters each have one as well. I’d reach out to her, expect that she is at once, enmeshed in her novel. If she looked up, I’d smile. I have my book in my bag, you see, but the lights are too dim for me to read. She is exactly the kind of person, I’d befriend if only she’d look up.
